About Musculoskeletal Disorders

Musculoskeletal disorders cost United States consumers and businesses billions of dollars each year.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) = Injuries and disorders that affect the human body’s movement or musculoskeletal system (i.e., muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, discs, blood vessels, etc.).(1)

MSDs are also known as “repetitive strain injuries,” “repetitive motion injuries,” and “overuse injuries.” They are caused by ergonomic factors such as repetition, excessive force, and awkward postures coupled with individual factors like poor body mechanics, fitness, and health.(2)

MSDs include conditions such as tendonosis, nerve compression disorders, osteoarthritis, joint injuries, low back pain, and other regional pain syndromes.(3)

Common MSDs:

  • Rotator Cuff Dysfunction

  • Trigger Finger/Thumb

  • DeQuervain’s Syndrome

  • Degenerative Disc Disease

  • Ruptured/Herniated Disc (1)

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Tendonosis of Elbow, Ankle, Shoulder

  • Muscle, Tendon, Ligament Strain/Sprain

  • Tension Neck Syndrome

  • Digital Neuritis

Most Americans will have some degree of repetitive strain injury, and 1 in 7 Americans will have a major orthopedic impairment.(4) The economic and social implications are enormous.

MSDs from repetitive trauma are preventable! By taking a proactive approach—rather than reacting to damage that has already been done—you can correct poor body mechanics in your workplace or leisure activities and avoid injury.
